The Sommelier Range

Each Riedel Sommelier is individually hand made for you, by craftsmen using techniques that are centuries old.

The raw materials (quartz sand, lead oxide, sodium and potassium) and heated in a furnace containing liquid lead crystal, at a working temperature of 1100°C/2012°F. The first step is to create the bowl using a glass bulb on hollow metal blow-pipe. The glass bulb is pre-moulded in a shaping block and then mouth-blown using the blow-pipe. Liquid glass is cut and pulled by shears to form the stem and then the foot using a moulded board. Finally a wooden tool is used to fix footplate securely, preventing wobbling.

"...when the latest lovely edition of the Red Apron magazine arrived a few days ago, it jogged my memory! It's such a great magazine, and I've also meant to write to say that before now!
